Description

From visionary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes this noir-style psychological thriller starring Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett that’s set against the dark backdrop of carnival life. When charismatic but down-on-his-luck Stanton Carlisle (Cooper) endears himself to clairvoyant Zeena (Toni Collette) and her has-been mentalist husband Pete (David Strathairn) at a traveling carnival, he crafts what seems to be a golden ticket to success. The more he uses his newly acquired knowledge to grift the wealthy elite of 1940s New York society, the more his ambition grows. Soon, with the virtuous Molly (Rooney Mara) loyally by his side, Stanton plots to con a dangerous tycoon (Richard Jenkins) with the aid of a mysterious psychiatrist (Blanchett), who might turn out to be his most formidable opponent yet. Also included in the all-star cast of NIGHTMARE ALLEY are Willem Dafoe, Ron Perlman and Mary Steenburgen. Master storyteller del Toro directed the taut thriller, which he co-wrote with Kim Morgan, based on the novel by William Lindsay Gresham.

This movie was made for an audience which used to exist. Back when people were more interesting, capable, intelligent, less narcissistic, and far less shallow. This is a fantastic movie, and it's too good for the average audience of today. If you enjoy noir, and actually know what that means, then you should give this film a watch. It's a dark tale of horrible people, grim decisions, and unsettling consequences.

Impeccably crafted and acted film noir. Brilliant cinematography, set and costume design. An improvement of the original classic.

I could care less about film NOIR. This was SLOWER than SLOW. DARK. TWISTED. UGLY. I can't stand these highly stylized movies that cover up for a thin and predictable storyline. Don't waste your money or time.

Gets off to a slow start, however it comes together ok at the end. It’s definitely worth a watch.

A terrific ride through character development, superb acting and beautiful sets. Hmmmm….the film might have lacked some forward motion, but in this age of over-stimuli nonsense made for kids, Nightmare Alley delivered pure pleasure and entertainment. It was great to see Bradley Cooper play a dark complex character (instead of an over-energized hunk), Toni Collette was deep and tragic, Willem Dafoe was a genial sociopath and Cate Blanchett was shining as a classic '40’s blonde disguised in sheeps clothing. The entire cast was stellar. A real treat and unfortunately these days, a rare bird.

Ignore the previous reviews. I’d like to see them produce a better movie. I enjoyed the movie. If you like Del Toro imaginary style of movies then I recommend it. The cast is outstanding. Bradly Cooper is always good however, Kate Blanchett and Toni Colette were mesmerizing.
